Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation Institute of the Caribbean has an impressive range of comprehensive Neuro-rehabilitation programs for adults and children who have sustained brain injury from:

  • Stroke-Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)
  • Traumatic Brain Injury after motor vehicle accident, assault, falls
  • Tumours – Cancer or Benign (before or after surgery)
  • Brain Injury from infection eg. after meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis

The most common brain injury occurs after a stroke. The best outcome in Rehabilitation is seen when Rehabilitation is started very soon after the stroke. It is well known that the injured brain is able to repair itself by the process of NEUROPLASTICITY (where nerves regenerate and form new pathways). Recovery can be accelerated by functional Rehabilitation, so maximizing Rehabilitation during the early phase is essential. Most recovery that will occur, does so within the first three (3) to six (6) months after a stroke, so early intervention contributes to a more favourable outcome. In Traumatic Brain Injury, patients may present with more complex motor or cognitive deficit and recovery may extend up to one to two years.

The Rehabilitation Institute of the Caribbean is a multidisciplinary centre where patients are treated using a team approach. The Physiatrists (Rehabilitation Medical Doctor) in collaboration with the physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, neuropsychologist, nutritionist and other rehabilitation professionals, create individualized therapy plans specific to the unique needs, abilities, and objectives of patients. Our goal in Rehabilitation is to assist patients to regain control of their lives by restoring function. We work with the referring Medical Doctor to facilitate patient’s recovery. Our well trained professional and highly skilled staff will provide the best possible rehabilitation programs for patients to recover, regardless of patients’ condition. Our Brain Injury Rehabilitation programs focus on treating patients with;
